What is Playworks?
Playworks is a collaborative project between NCTAE, UNCG and NC Thespians to foster playwriting in North Carolina Public Schools.
The Focus is on the process of playwriting and support of the merging playwright. While the main focus of the project is on students, the Playworks Project recognizes that teachers must be also be taught and nurtured so that they may guide students to higher achievement.

WRITE IT!
Write it is a playwriting contest for students in grades 4-12. Each NCTAE member can submit up to five entries from their school.
Winners will receive:
High School Middle School
1st Place: $200.00 1st Place: $100.00
2nd Place: $100.00 One Honorable mention
3rd Place: $50.00
Two Honorable Mentions
Elementary School
1st Place: $50.00

A staged reading of all of the winning entries will be produced at Center Stage with feedback and discussion to follow.
All high school students that submit a play will be invited to attend a Playwriting Workshop with professional playwrights. See the Center stage page for more details.

The winning plays of Write It will be produced in a staged reading at UNCG's Brown Theatre! UNCG students will serve as actors and directors for the scripts.

ITS Festival - March 16 & 17
at the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts
Playwriting Individual Event:
The purpose of NCTAE Playworks Project at the NC Thespian Festival is to encourage students across North Carolina to write plays/theatrical events. The focus is on playwriting and the presentations will be staged readings with limited set pieces and no costumes. Entries may be created by one author or an ensemble.
1. Student playwrights must be registered participants in the 2012 festival in order to submit a play.
2. Works can be no longer than 40 minutes.
3. A teacher must sponsor the work.
4. If there is subject matter or language stronger than PG, this must be noted on registration materials.
5. Program info must be given to adjudicators prior to reading.
6. Minimal set. Several stools will be provided.
7. No special lighting is available.
8. After each presentation, a guided discussion will be held between the cast/audience/director and playwright.
9. Each adjudicator will give each play a rating of Superior, Excellent, or Good (based on script and not performance)
10. A hard copy of permissions sheet must be included in the physical registration materials.
11. One copy of the script should be emailed to CJ Breland as a PDF or Word .doc to cjbreland_gmail.com
